Saved by the Washing of Rebirth
Scripture · Titus 3:4-8
But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
Reflection
Have you ever felt like you had to earn your way into someone's good graces? Maybe you’ve spent your life trying to be 'good enough' to deserve God’s love, keeping a mental checklist of your successes and failures. The Apostle Paul cuts through that exhausting effort with a beautiful truth: God didn’t save us because of our righteous deeds. He didn’t look for the most improved person or the most religious heart. Instead, He saved us simply because He is kind and merciful. Think of it like a deep, spiritual bath. Paul calls it the 'washing of rebirth.' When we come to Christ, the Holy Spirit doesn't just patch up our old lives; He gives us a brand-new start. He pours out His Spirit abundantly, like a fountain that never runs dry. We are made right with God not by our sweat and strain, but by His lavish grace through Jesus Christ. We are now His heirs, holding a secure hope for eternity that no mistake can take away. This doesn't mean our behavior doesn't matter, but the order is vital. We don't do good works to get God to love us; we do them because He already does. When we truly understand that we are washed and renewed by His mercy, we naturally want to spend our lives doing things that are 'good and profitable' for those around us. Our goodness is the fruit of His grace, not the root of it.
Prayer
Lord God, thank You for Your incredible kindness and love. I confess that I often try to rely on my own strength and goodness instead of Your mercy. Thank You for the washing of rebirth and for the Holy Spirit who renews my heart daily. Help me to live today in the joy of being Your child and an heir to Your promises. Let my life be full of good works that honor You and help others. Amen.
